Maintaining a clean home not only makes you feel less stressed, but it’s therapeutic for some!

While the thought of keeping up with household chores may seem overwhelming, establishing a weekly cleaning routine can make the task more manageable and efficient.

In this article, we’ll explore a step-by-step guide to keeping a clean home on a weekly basis, covering essential tasks for each area of your living space.

  1. Create a Cleaning Schedule:

     The first step in maintaining a clean home is to create a cleaning schedule that outlines specific tasks to be completed each week. Divide your cleaning tasks into daily, weekly, and monthly categories, taking into account the size of your home and your individual preferences. Having a structured cleaning schedule will help you stay organized and ensure that no areas are overlooked. For me, my weekly schedule starts on Sunday through Saturday, and it is as follows: Kitchen, Bathroom, Livingroom, Office/Laundry room, Bedrooms, Outdoors/Garage, and Saturday I do nothing!
  2. Gather Cleaning Supplies:

     Before you begin your weekly cleaning routine, gather all the necessary cleaning supplies and equipment. This may include:
    • All-purpose cleaner
    • Glass cleaner
    • Disinfectant wipes
    • Microfiber cloths
    • Vacuum cleaner
    • Broom and dustpan
    • Mop and bucket
    • Scrub brushes
    • Toilet brush
    • Trash bags
    Having these supplies readily available will streamline the cleaning process and make it easier to tackle each task efficiently.
  3. Start with Decluttering:

     Before you start cleaning, take a few minutes to declutter each room in your home. Remove any items that are out of place and put them back where they belong. Clearing clutter not only makes cleaning easier but also helps create a sense of order and tranquility in your living space.
  4. Focus on High-Traffic Areas:

     Begin your weekly cleaning routine by focusing on high-traffic areas that tend to accumulate the most dirt and grime. This may include:

    • Entryways and hallways

    • Living room

    • Kitchen

    • Bathroom

    Spend extra time cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in these areas to maintain a clean and hygienic environment for your family. Start with the areas you dislike cleaning then move on to the less hectic tasks.
  5. Dust and Vacuum:

     Dusting and vacuuming are essential tasks that should be performed weekly to remove dust, pet dander, and other allergens from your home. Use a microfiber cloth to dust surfaces such as furniture, shelves, and baseboards, paying special attention to hard-to-reach areas. Lastly, vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery to remove dirt and debris. Why? Because whatever you clean has fell to the floor thus making it the last area to clean.
  6. Clean Surfaces and Appliances:

     Next, focus on cleaning surfaces and appliances in your kitchen and bathroom. Use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down countertops, sinks, and faucets, removing any stains or residue. In the kitchen, clean the stovetop, microwave, and refrigerator, while in the bathroom, scrub the toilet, shower, and bathtub to remove soap scum and mildew.
  7. Tackle Floors and Carpets:

     Mopping and vacuuming floors and carpets should be done weekly to keep them looking clean and well-maintained. If you have kids, you know all too well how dirty your floors can get on a daily basis. Use a mop and bucket to mop hard floors, paying attention to corners and edges. For carpets, vacuum thoroughly to remove dirt, pet hair, and allergens, using a crevice tool to clean along baseboards and under furniture.
  8. Change Bedding and Linens:

     Don’t forget to change bedding and linens on a weekly basis to ensure a fresh and hygienic sleep environment. Strip beds and wash sheets, pillowcases, and blankets in hot water to kill dust mites and remove allergens. Also, launder towels and kitchen linens regularly to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.
  9. Empty Trash and Recycling Bins:

     Emptying trash and recycling bins is a quick and easy task that should be done weekly to prevent odors and keep your home smelling fresh. Dispose of garbage and recyclables properly, replacing trash bags as needed. Consider using scented trash bags or adding baking soda to the bottom of bins to neutralize odors.
